As big as all Alaska. D'oh.

Both sets of Nasturtiums are up. The first two plants of the Alaska ones are getting HUGE, but the Peach Melba ones do not appear to be very happy. Hopefully some more water and more light will be good for them. Last night, we opened the flap on the greenhouse, and today we’re going to start moving them outside during the day to "harden them off."

Nasturtiums are edible, too. Sweet.

Yesterday, I planted more Nasturtiums (Peach Melba) in the covered, heated tray. Eggplant, Broccoli, and Nicole’s Impatiens are getting second set of leaves.

3/20 update

Garlic Chives, Spearmint, and Bell Peppers have started sprouting. I moved Spearmint and Chamomile to the uncovered tray.

Fir on fire!

Chamomile and Cherry Tomatoes have sprouted. I moved Cherry Tomatoes to the non-heated seed tray. The Chamomile wasn’t fully up yet, so I left it in the covered tray.

We completed the burning I started earlier this week. The fir tree, mulberry trees, and ugly bush were burned. We still need to get the stumps out.

Mixing in some flowers for our companion gardening

Broccoli has started sprouting. I moved the seedlings to the non-heated seed tray with the rest of the already-sprouted seeds. Then, I planted some Nasturtium (Alaska) in its place; also planted a few Delphiniums.

I’m still a little worried about the florescent light. The eggplant is looking a little leggy already. I picked up a second light unit. As soon as I can find the chain, I’ll hook that one up, too. Hopefully two lights will give enough light.

Lettuce and Lovage. Well, lovage, anyway...

Today, I planted Purple Bell Peppers and Lovage in the heated seed tray, and thyme in a 4” pot. I also planted Cole’s Sweet Peas in a larger pot.

We decided to reclaim some space for another garden plot below the current three plots, so I chopped down the two mulberry trees and the ugly, nasty bush. I piled them up on top of an old dead semi-dried fir tree and attempted to build a bonfire, but everything was just a little too wet. There’s no rain in the forecast until Saturday (and only a little bit then), so hopefully that will give everything a chance to dry out and we can burn this weekend or next week.

3/14 update

I planted the following seeds in a heated seed tray: cherry tomatoes, broccoli, chamomile, spearmint, lavender hyssop, cumin, garlic chives.

Seeing things in a new light

Last night we picked up two florescent lights that I need to install in the greenhouse. Unfortunately, the grow light bulbs at Teske’s won’t fit in that model light, so that’s a bummer… we’ll just have to see if the regular florescent bulbs provide enough of the right kind of light for seedlings. The internet says they should.

Dagnab stupid leggy eggplant

Scotch Bonnet Peppers began sprouting yesterday. Not all seedlings are up, but they are well-started.

Unfortunately, I’m worried the eggplants are going to get a little leggy (similar to last year’s broccoli) unless we get them some more light. I moved the seed tray out to the table in the three-season room this morning… we’ll have to bring them inside at night, lest they get too cold, but hopefully that will allow them the additional light they need. Otherwise, I may have to look into buying/building grow lights.

Nothing better than spotting new sproutlings after a weekend away

The eggplant has begun sprouting! We came back from an out-of-town weekend on Sunday, and almost all the eggplant had popped up, happy as can be. There is still nothing from the peppers – I expect them to sprout between the 10th and 17th.

Cole planted impatiens today.

Oh, sweet basil!

Sweet Basil has begun sprouting! I don’t see anything from the eggplant or peppers yet, but they are supposed to take 14-21 days to germinate. I’m still checking every day.

Cole’s impatiens seeds did not arrive until this week, so we’re planning to set up the greenhouse and heat mats next week.
